It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Beverly Ann Hawkins, a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, auntie, cousin, and friend, who left us too soon on January 29, 2025, in her home in Washington, DC. Born on January 23, 1957, in Newport, Maryland, Beverly was a true embodiment of love, warmth, and selflessness. Her kindness was endless, and she dedicated her life to caring for others—whether it was her family, friends, or anyone who needed her—always making sure everyone felt seen, valued, and loved.
Beverly’s journey began in the classrooms of Charles County, Maryland, where she graduated from LaPlata High School. She relocated to Washington DC in 1976. Her heart for helping others led her to a career as a Licensed Home Health Care Aid, where her unwavering dedication brought comfort to so many in their most vulnerable times. She poured herself into her work, always ensuring those around her were cared for, not just physically, but emotionally as well.
But beyond her incredible career, Beverly had a gift for bringing people together with food. Her fried chicken and potato salad were not just meals; they were acts of love, an invitation to gather, laugh, and savor the warmth of family. Her kitchen was a place where no one ever went hungry—spiritually or physically. There was always room at her table for more, and the laughter and love that filled her home was unforgettable. She had the voice of encouragement.
Beverly was also a woman of great joy, and it was impossible not to be swept up in her energy. She loved dancing to Oldies but Goodies, Southern Soul music and Go-Go music, letting the rhythm of life move her in ways that were infectious. A proud fan of the Washington Commanders, her loyalty to the team was just one example of how she gave her heart completely to the things and people she loved. Her zest for life was boundless, and her spirit lit up every room she entered.
Beverly’s love story did not just end with her. She leaves behind her two sons, Darrell Hawkins (Amy) and Jarmar Layne, who carry forward her legacy of kindness and love. Her grandchildren, Topaze Hawkins and Amaya Evans, and her godchildren, Marquis Hawkins, Kimberly Hawkins, and AJ shall forever hold onto the memories of the woman who guided them with a gentle hand and an open heart. Her siblings, Carolyn Armstrong, and Donald Hawkins (Patricia) are left to honor the woman who was not only family but a dear friend. Her devoted nieces (Trina, Joyce, and Connie) and nephews (Daryl, David, and Anthony) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and family members. Her best friends (Tijuana, Lisa, Phyliss, and Cindy).
Beverly is now reunited with her life partner, James Layne, and her parents, Allie, and Helen Hawkins, who taught her the very values she carried throughout her life. She is reunited with her siblings Elaine Johnson, Helen Snow, Madeline Hawkins, Catherine Hawkins, Walter Hawkins, Louis Hawkins, and Haskell Campbell, along with Johnathan Armstrong—each of whom will greet her with open arms. She also reunited with her best friends (Patricia and Linda).
A Celebration of Life will be held at Israel Total Life Ministries in Waldorf, MD, on February 15, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, as we honor her memory and the legacy of love she leaves behind.
