In Loving Memory of Anthony Clifton Watkins
It is with profound sorrow and deep respect that we announce the passing of Anthony Clifton Watkins, an indomitable spirit in the art world, who departed this life on March 28, 2025, in Maryland. Born on April 7, 1953, in Lawrenceville, Virginia and baptized at an early age at Beulah Baptist Church in Woodford, Virginia. Anthony's life was a remarkable journey of creativity, intellect, and heartfelt passion.
From an early age, Anthony demonstrated an extraordinary gift for artistry, embarking on his painting career at the tender age of twelve. A self-proclaimed entrepreneur in the art industry, he dedicated his life to his craft, producing stunning oil paintings that graced the walls of galleries nationwide. His skill was not only recognized by the public but also celebrated within competitive circles, where he amassed several first-place awards, showcasing his talent and unwavering commitment to his artistic pursuits.
Educated through the Spotsylvania public school system, Anthony then began his studies at Howard University pursuing a degree in chemical engineering before transferring to UCLA for the same program. In pursuit of his art career, Anthony went on to attend a prestigious and exclusive art school in France, Beaux-Arts de Paris, on a scholarship. He was a highly intellectual individual, able to engage in thoughtful conversations on a myriad of topics, relishing the stimulation of the mind. Anthony spoke French, Spanish, but with the most proficiency he spoke German. He embraced diversity of language and culture wholeheartedly and enjoyed the ways in which those experiences expanded his life.
Despite his admirable accomplishments and busy career, Anthony remained deeply connected to his family, who were always at the heart of his artwork and life. He is survived by his son, Nathaniel Watkins, and stepdaughter, Ainsley Fay-Merkl, whose lives he enriched with love and creativity. Additionally, he leaves behind his step-grandchildren, Kellan and August. His cherished siblings, Reginald Watkins and Pamela Harmon are the pillars of strength and love that remain for Anthony and his family. Reginald (Lynetta) resides in Virginia near his daughter, Anthony’s niece, Ashley Lyles (Darryl). Pamela (Knowles) resides in Maryland near to her sons, Anthony’s nephews, Karl (Charisma) and Patrick. Furthermore, Anthony is survived by his grand-nephews and grand-nieces Skyler, Tyler, Aleah, Karmin, and Ariah.
Anthony was predeceased by his loving parents, Lonnie and Marion Woods, whose legacy undoubtedly influenced his passion for art and family, and his grandparents Nathaniel and Annie Watkins who had an irreplaceable and immense effect on his upbringing. He spent his days surrounded by those he loved, nurturing relationships and sharing the joy of his artistic endeavors.
As we gather in remembrance of his impactful life, let us celebrate the indelible mark Anthony Clifton Watkins has left on both the art community and his beloved family. His funeral service will be held at Lighthouse Baptist Church, located at 3150 Middletown Rd, Waldorf, MD 20603, on April 10, 2025. Viewing begins at 10:00 AM, with the funeral beginning at 11:00 AM.
Anthony's spirit will forever be enshrined in the canvases that bear his touch and in the hearts of all who knew him. His legacy is one of creativity, brilliance, and an unwavering appreciation of life's beauty.
